Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease which most commonly occurs in the small intestine and colon. However, it can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract.
The symptoms of Crohn’s disease often develop gradually with certain symptoms becoming worse over time. Early on, it is possible to mistake the symptoms for other conditions such as food poisoning. However, the symptoms may become more severe as the disease progresses., leading to complications such as a perianal fistula, inflammation of the joints and skin and anaemia.
Anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressants are the most common forms of medication prescribed to treat Crohn’s disease. These drugs manage the inflammatory symptoms that are caused by the disease.
Ultimately, if less invasive treatments don’t improve the symptoms, surgery may be necessary. According to Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, 75 percent of patients will eventually be required to get surgery.
